Introduction
Choosing the right season for your birdwatching trip to Peru is crucial. The country's dramatic geography creates distinct weather patterns that directly affect road conditions, trail accessibility, and bird behaviors. For the Manu transect, the dry and shoulder seasons offer the best balance of safety and bird activity [1].
The Dry Season (May to August)
This is the peak travel window for the Andes and Amazon. With minimal rainfall, the Manu Road is stable, and trails are dry and easy to navigate. Bird activity is high, particularly in the cloud forests where many species are nesting. However, because this is the dry season, some lowland clay licks may see reduced activity early in the season.
The Breeding and Clay Lick Peak (September to November)
Widely considered the sweet spot for birders, this shoulder season offers maximum bird activity. As the rainy season approaches, many canopy trees begin to flower and fruit, triggering breeding behaviors. Lowland clay licks see their highest activity of the year, with hundreds of macaws feeding daily. Boreal migratory species also arrive from North America.
The Rainy Season (December to April)
During these months, heavy rainfall is common throughout the Manu watershed. Landslides can block the Manu Road, and rising river levels make boat travel challenging. While birding is still possible and many species are active, the logistics are much more difficult, and many remote lodges close for maintenance.
Monthly Birdwatching Calendar
To help plan your trip, we recommend reviewing our seasonal calendar: May to July is ideal for high-altitude Andean species and general cloud forest birding; August to October is perfect for lowland macaw clay licks and migratory arrivals; November is excellent for breeding plumage displays.
