What Our Fellow Birders Say

Read firsthand stories from passionate birdwatchers, conservationists, and photographers who have explored the Manu Biosphere with us.

"The 10-day Manu Transect is the holy grail for serious listing. Our guide Miguel could identify every single vocalization. Spotting the rare Bearded Mountaineer in the dry valley and the Harpy Eagle at the lowland nest in a single trip was absolutely unforgettable. The logistics were flawless."

Dr. Arthur Pendelton Oxford, United Kingdom The Ultimate Manu Transect (10 Days)

"Watching the Cock-of-the-rock mating display at the lek in the cloud forest was a surreal experience. The small group size (we were only 5!) meant we had plenty of telescope time. The binoculars provided were top-tier, and our guide's knowledge of micro-habitats was outstanding."

Sarah & David Vance Colorado, USA Cloud Forest & Canopy Expedition (5 Days)

"As a wildlife photographer, I had high expectations for the Blanquillo clay licks and oxbow lakes. The hides are perfectly positioned, and we captured incredible shots of Scarlet Macaws and the prehistoric Hoatzin. The private chef's meals at the end of long field days were a wonderful bonus."

Birgitta Lindqvist Stockholm, Sweden Lowland Clay Licks & Oxbow Lakes (7 Days)

"As a retired biology professor, I was deeply impressed by their commitment to eco-conservation. They support indigenous reserves and practice truly low-impact tourism. The accommodations were remarkably comfortable for being deep in the primary Amazon forest."

Dr. Karen Hensley California, USA The Ultimate Manu Transect (10 Days)

"A truly professional operation. Tracking down the cryptic Agami Heron and the Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo requires immense guide patience and local expertise, both of which were in abundance. I've done birding tours all over the world, and this ranks as one of the very best."

Jean-Pierre Dubois Lyon, France Lowland Clay Licks & Oxbow Lakes (7 Days)

"The canopy walkway is spectacular. Standing 30 meters above the jungle floor scanning for Paradise Tanagers and Quetzals with pristine optics is a memory I will cherish forever. Seamless transfer from Cusco and exceptional safety protocols throughout."

Manu Birdwatching FAQ

Get answers to typical questions about logistics, booking, and birdwatching conditions in the Peruvian rainforest.

What is the best month for birdwatching in Manu?

The optimal months are during the dry and shoulder seasons from May to November. During this window, road conditions are stable, trails are easier to navigate, and birds are highly active. September and October are especially famous for macaw clay lick activity and breeding plumage displays.

What altitude zones do the birding tours cover?

Our Ultimate Manu Transect covers altitudes from 3,800 meters in the high Andes (Cusco/Acjanaco) down to 250 meters in the Amazon river lowlands (Manu river). This allows you to spot high-altitude hummers, mid-altitude cloud forest specialists (like the Cock-of-the-rock), and lowland river giants.

What optics and camera gear do you recommend?

We recommend binoculars with 8x42 or 10x42 specifications for general scanning. A spotting scope is incredibly useful, although our guides carry high-end scopes for client use. For photography, a telephoto lens of at least 400mm is advised to capture detail in the dense, dark rainforest canopy.

Is the tour suitable for beginner birdwatchers?

Yes, absolutely. While our itineraries target hard-to-find species for listing birders, our expert guides customize the pacing. The Cloud Forest & Canopy Expedition is particularly well-suited for beginners due to comfortable lodging and easy trail access.
