Introduction
Staying at specialized birding lodges is one of the keys to a successful Manu expedition. Unlike generic tourist hotels, these eco-lodges are located in prime habitats and designed around the needs of birders, featuring extensive trail networks, canopy platforms, and guides who monitor local species [1].
Wayqecha Cloud Forest Biological Station
Run by the Association for the Conservation of the Amazon Basin (ACCA), Wayqecha is located at 2,900 meters. It serves as both a research station and an eco-lodge. It features clean, comfortable cabins and a network of trails through the high cloud forest. Target species here include the Red-and-white Antpitta and numerous high-altitude hummingbirds.
Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge
Located in the heart of the San Pedro cloud forest at 1,400 meters, this lodge is famous for its proximity to an active Cock-of-the-rock lek. The lodge grounds feature hummingbird feeders attracting up to 20 species, and a trail system through the mid-elevation forest. It offers private cabins with hot water and delicious local meals.
Villa Carmen Biological Station
Situated in the foothills at 500 meters, Villa Carmen offers comfortable lodging and access to specialized bamboo forest habitats. The station has over 40 kilometers of trails, agricultural fields, and secondary forest. Key targets include the Bamboo Antshrike, Rufous-breasted Piculet, and the rare Peruvian Recurvebill.
Lowland Lodges and Blanquillo
For the lowland portion of the route, lodges like Manu Learning Centre and Blanquillo Lodge offer access to primary terra-firme forest, oxbow lakes, and macaw clay licks. These lodges are typically more rustic, utilizing solar energy and composting toilets to minimize their environmental footprint on the pristine forest.
